Training Requirements
Child Care Center Staff
As a general rule, child care center staff are required to:
- A full-time child care center staff will need to take between 20-40 hours of training each year (based on level of education).
- Infant/Child CPR. Effective August 1, 2011 all teachers and assistant teachers must have taken CPR within 90 days of starting or have proof they have taken it within the last 3 years. CPR must be taken every 3 years.
- First Aid. All teachers and assistant teachers must take First Aid within 90 days of starting or have proof of taking it within the last 3 years. First Aid needs to be taken every 3 years.
- Shaken Baby training must be taken every 5 years for those staff caring for children under school age and a short video needs to be reviewed annually.
- SIDS training must be taken every 5 years for staff caring for infants.
FamilyChild Care Providers
Prior to becoming licensed you must complete the following trainings:
- Infant-Child CPR
- First Aid
Additional training requirements prior to becoming licensed might include:
- Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) training - If you plan to care for infants.
- Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) training - if you plan to care for children under school age.
- Car Passenger Safety Training - if you plan to transport children under age 9.
During your first year of licensure, you must:
Complete a minimum of 8 training hours total. These 8 hours must include: 2 hours specific to "child growth and development". "Child growth and development training" means training in understanding how children acquire language and develop physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially.
Ongoing Training:
In order to stay licensed you must complete 8 hours of training each year.
- CPR must be taken every three years
- SBS must be taken every 5 years if you plan to care for children under school age (a short video also needs to be reveiwed annually)
- SIDS training must be taken every 5 years if you plan to care for infants
- Car Passenger Safety training must be taken every 5 years if you plan to transport children under age 9.
